When were man made diamonds first made and how are they produced in the laboratory?

The first proven man-made diamonds were made by GE in 1954, under a project codenamed "Project Superpressure."  Later as the industry flourished and new technologies developed, diamonds started being produced in a laboratory. These days CVD technology is used. CVD lab-grown diamonds are produced within a growth chamber. It uses a diamond seed placed inside a sealed chamber heated to over 1,400 Fahrenheit and filled with carbon-rich gases like methane and hydrogen.  These gases are then ionized into plasma. The idea is basically to break down the molecular bond of the gas.  Once the molecular bond is broken down, pure carbon begins to stick to the seed, and a new diamond form.
